The one aspect that I can't get away from is that the NK leadership does not have a death wish. It has been huffing and puffing for decades. It realizes that firing a nuclear weapon means the end of the regime.

A military strike is too risky. it's almost impossible to make contact with the generals to persuade them to initiate a coup. Who in the group would fit the bill? China will not do anything because it enjoys watching the US squirm and also wants concessions on economic and human rights issues. As Lincoln said about slavery, "If all power were given to me...."
